About Elena Mathys

I was born in the beautiful city of Riga, Latvia, where I received my musical education at the Darzin School of Music for the talented and gifted. I then earned my master's degree in piano performance from the Latvian State Conservatory, where I also studied early music and harpsichord. As a harpsichordist, I performed in Poland, Lithuania, France, Sweden, Germany, and the Czech Republic.

After moving to the United States, my focus became teaching piano to students of various ages, from pre-kindergarten to seniors in high school, as well as a few adults. Over the years, my studio has attracted many serious students who believe in achieving high-performing results through systematic practice.

As a teacher, I believe in working rigorously on and solidifying piano technique in order to make any piece possible and enjoyable to play, no matter the difficulty. I focus heavily on correct hand posture, as well as the use of the whole arm and body in order to bring out the expressiveness  of the piece, the voice of the musician, and to avoid soreness and injury. I help my students improve their sight-reading skills and I study with them the different musical styles and eras, which helps them better understand the music they are playing.

Fortunately, the Boulder-Denver area offers many exciting opportunities for young pianists to perform, and I encourage my students to partake in competitions, recitals, and festivals. My students have participated in and were on many occasions the winners of the Yamaha, Kawai, and Schmitt Competitions, as well as the CSMTA Concerto Competition, MTNA (state and regional levels), the Steinway Concerto Competition, the Steinway Piano Competition, and the Boulder Bach Festival and Competition.

As the result of their hard work, diligent practicing, and high achievements, many of my students have performed with professional orchestras: the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, the National Repertory Orchestra, the Breckenridge Music Festival Orchestra, the New York Concerti Sinfonietta, the Boulder Symphony, the Arapahoe Philharmonic, the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Inside the Orchestra program.
